There is no way Obama can carry this fantasy. Eventually the "disappointment" will come, the same critical spirit we saw bubble up in Jesse Jackson's candid remarks (the emasculating comments) will return. It's only a matter of time, of course.

But this flare will be media borne: the issue is character. While I've been critical of Obama's rhetoric and the way he "whited-up" with Wright, I still have deep hopes (as do many) that when the criticisms come, when the demagogic magic is over, he still does the right thing.

I admit it. The Reagan thing bugged me irrationally.

Yesterday, I ran a workshop for high school teachers on race after the election. It's clearly not going away -- racial problems will only get worse, I think.

Myself, I worry that the man who said that Reagan was a transformative figure in American politics (and who was viewed as a relatively conservative to centrist editor of some law review, according to a Frontline special) will eventually disappoint a lot of people.

Re-elect Al Gore!

A qualification: my uneasiness is not with Obama per se but, rather, that it is the structure, stupid!

"...the mass media has become a mawkish merchandiser, but a merchandiser for what? Demagoguery, of course.... We are witnessing demagoguery on a stick..."

Dude, thank you for saying out loud what has been eating at me for months now, several things in fact: all this "post-racial" nonsense that obscures and misdirects Obama's thorough assimilation into mainstream politics, the "bipartisan" agenda his cabinet picks reveal, backtracking on rolling back Bush era abuses of power and democratic checks and balances, the hero worship and *desperate* "hope" reaching nigh-messianic levels, and the intimate ties with coroprate merchandising and MSM coverage orgy. Now he's been tagged with the "cute" monicker PEBO?!? WTF? I worry that, like The Who crooned, "New boss is the same as the old boss."

I didn't finish my thought: Obama now occupies the space once taken up by soothsaying and horoscopes. This is to say he as become The Big What-If, promising health, romance, wealth, and travel in your near future.

Just returned from the grocery store, as I'm having cravings for cucumber and cayenne. In the check-out line was a "commemorative magazine" with Obama on the cover. I couldn't discern if the magazine had an actual title. Instead, there will little phrases all over the cover: "America's Hope," "America's Reputation Restored," and "How Your Life will Be Better a Year from Now."

Aw, c'mon Josh. Just buy your Obama commemorative coin set and join everyone else in celebrating post-racial America. Surely there can't really be anything sinister lurking, can there...?
